The Herbert Art Gallery & Museum opened in 1960 and is part of Coventry Heritage & Arts Trust. It exists to bring history and the arts to life and does so through an extensive programme of community engagement to support its policy of free admission to the public. The Herbert is recognised as being one of the largest Museums in Central England and currently averages 320,000 visitors per year. It is a registered educational charity, making Education and Learning central to all of its activities, and in 2010 was voted the most family friendly museum in the UK.
The Herbert is unique within its sector in having an interdisciplinary digital media team. Herbert Media specialises in media production, professional development training, audio visual trouble shooting in the galleries and the delivery of vocational accredited training to disadvantaged young people.. The team was voted the Most Outstanding Business Innovation at the regional Godiva Awards in 2009 and is an accredited centre for the delivery of NCFE, OCR and OCN qualifications that's training delivery has been described as "outstanding" and "exceptional" in recent awarding body external verifications.
